Garden Design

A well-designed garden lifts your spirits. It's not just because it's pretty; harmony and proportion are working on a subconscious level to make it feel … just right. This sense of satisfaction is achieved by time spent at the drawing board pencil in hand, scribbling and scrubbing out, playing with curves and shapes, scale and proportion, focal points and views until I have the basis of something really special.

People are quite often unaware of the potential their garden holds, and can be surprised by the difference a fresh approach and creative thinking can make. Its easy to look at a garden and say, "I'd put the terrace here, the natural swimming pool at the end and the rose garden along that wall" but its not 'til you get everything down on paper that it becomes possible to create patterns that tie everything together and make it beautiful.

With your completed design you'll get the technical documents that are necessary for a landscaper to build the garden. These include a scale plan, construction drawings, building specifications, 3D rendering (this can also help you to understand the design), and any other details necessary, such as lighting schematics and specifications. The full process is detailed here.

Planting design

If you're satisfied with the bare bones of your garden, but it doesn't fill you with joy or you can't get anything to grow in it, let me at it! My favourite thing is to share my love of plants with people. Whatever your preferred look, whether it's formal, modern, romantic, wild or just low maintenance there are gorgeous plants out there waiting for you to discover them.

Designing with plants is the most exciting way to play with colour because the effect is not just visual. Plants bring colour, texture, scent, movement, sound, insect and bird life, structure and softness and what's more they change over time. When I design your border I'm not creating a snapshot of a moment in time, but a shifting tableau.

I'll provide you with a plan or series of plans that will cover the changing seasons and suit the growing conditions on your property (which all too often here in London means a lot of builders' rubble under the soil or subterranean tributaries of the Thames). Reshaping borders and lawns also comes under the heading of planting design; it's amazing what you can do with a bit of imagination and metal lawn edging. I'll also source plants and set out and plant - or supervise the planting of - your new borders.

Garden rejuvenation

Sometimes all that's needed is a good prune and a bit of love. Many gardens with established shrubs can be hugely improved by a bit of horticultural taming, filling in of neglected patches, and a program of regular professional care, whether that is twice a week or twice a year. I can give your plants some expert attention and suggest an ongoing maintenance routine.
